Gunther confronts Cody Rhodes over contract signing on SmackDown
Gunther refused to sign a contract for a title match against Cody Rhodes at Clash in Italy during Friday Night SmackDown. Rhodes set up the table and chairs in the ring and urged Gunther to complete the paperwork. Gunther accused Rhodes of inserting himself into the process and turning the moment into a personal spotlight.
Paul Heyman had arranged the championship opportunity after Gunther declined a standard SmackDown contract. Rhodes, identified as the face of the brand, responded by stating that Gunther had already received the advantage through Heyman’s favor. He placed the contract in the ring and asked Gunther to sign it to guarantee the match.
Royce Keys interrupted the segment and offered to sign the contract himself if Gunther declined. SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis ruled that Gunther had forfeited automatic title contention and scheduled a match between Gunther and Keys for later in the evening. Gunther defeated Keys after Solo Sikoa’s interference created a distraction that allowed a powerbomb and pinfall. Rhodes then attacked Gunther from behind following the match.
Earlier in the night, Carmelo Hayes defeated Ricky Saints in a singles match. Hayes used a roll-up with illegal leverage on the ropes after Saints argued with the referee, securing the victory.
