Jay Bilas, an ESPN college basketball analyst who played for Duke from 1982 to 1986, described how head coach Mike Krzyzewski simplified the 64-team NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament bracket for the Blue Devils during Bilas's senior season.[1][2]
The 1986 tournament marked the second year of the 64-team format, which expanded from 53 teams the previous year.[3] Krzyzewski, who coached Duke from 1980 to 2022 and won five national championships, focused the team on smaller sub-brackets to reduce pressure.[1][4]
Bilas recounted Krzyzewski telling the team to ignore the 32 teams on the opposite side of their East Region bracket, noting that only one would advance to face Duke potentially in the final.[1] He presented the first weekend's games in Greensboro, North Carolina, as a four-team "Greensboro Invitational."[1]
Duke, the No. 1 seed in the East Region, played its first- and second-round games at Greensboro Coliseum, defeating Mississippi Valley State 85-62 on March 14 and Old Dominion 71-65 in overtime on March 16.[5][6]
The Blue Devils then moved to the East Regional at Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Krzyzewski framed the games as a "Meadowlands Invitational."[1] Duke beat No. 3 seed DePaul 73-67 in the semifinal on March 21, while No. 2 seed Syracuse defeated No. 6 seed Navy—led by future Hall of Famer David Robinson—83-81 on the other side of the bracket.[5][6]
Duke advanced with a 69-65 win over Syracuse in the regional final on March 22 before reaching the Final Four in Dallas, Texas, where it beat Kansas 67-60 in the semifinal but lost to Louisville 72-69 in the championship game on March 31.[5][6]
Bilas said the approach helped Duke players focus solely on their path, to the point that he remembers little about other 1986 tournament games despite his detailed knowledge of March Madness history.[1]
