Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green attends U.S. men's flag football national team trials

Darrell Green, 64, a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee who played cornerback for the Washington Redskins from 1983 to 2002, is participating in trials for the U.S. men's flag football national team in Chula Vista, California.[1][2][3]

Green qualified via USA Football's digital combine, where his results impressed staff despite his age relative to other participants. "Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look. ... He’s a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week," said Callie Brownson, USA Football senior director of high performance and national teams.[1][2]

He aims for an invitation to national team training camp next month and a potential roster spot on the squad for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Amberg, Germany.[1][2][4]

The Redskins selected Green in the first round, 28th overall, of the 1983 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville. In 295 games, he amassed 54 interceptions -- including six returned for touchdowns -- and an estimated 1,202 combined tackles. He won Super Bowls XXII and XXVI, made seven Pro Bowls and earned one First-Team All-Pro selection.[3][5]

Green was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.[5]

The trials feature around 100 men and women athletes seeking national team attention, including former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State quarterback O'Mariah Gordon.[1][2]

The U.S. men's flag football team has won six of the seven IFAF World Championships since 2010.[1][6]

Flag football will debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.[7]

"I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way," Green said.[1][2]
