Perfect NCAA Tournament Brackets Dwindle to 224 After First Round

The first round of the 2026 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament concluded on Friday, March 20, 2026, significantly reducing the number of perfect brackets submitted across major platforms.

According to the NCAA Bracket Challenge tracker, more than 36 million brackets were filled out, with only 224 remaining flawless entering the second round on Saturday, March 21.[1]

The figure had been roughly 14,000 after Thursday's games featuring several upsets, dropping further despite no major Cinderella stories on Friday. By Saturday afternoon, following No. 1 seed Michigan's advancement to the Sweet 16, 207 perfect brackets survived.[1]

Key results included No. 7 seed Kentucky's overtime win over No. 10 seed Santa Clara at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Kentucky guard Otega Oweh hit a 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left in regulation, sparking an 8-0 overtime run for the victory.[2][3]

Utah State defeated Villanova 86-76, eliminating around 3,200 brackets, while Kentucky's win busted approximately 6,000 more.[1]

The 68-team single-elimination tournament, officially the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship, continues with second-round matchups including No. 11 Texas vs. No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 11 VCU vs. No. 3 Illinois, and No. 12 High Point vs. No. 4 Arkansas.[1]

The NCAA identifies Michigan State vs. Louisville as a potential major bracket buster; a Louisville upset would leave just 74 perfect entries.[1]

A perfect bracket covering all 63 games offers substantial prizes beyond bragging rights on various platforms.[4]
