Williams Says Cowboys Defense Unrecognizable Under New Coordinator Parker
Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Quinnen Williams says the team's defense has transformed dramatically since last season under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. "The growth, it's like night and day," Williams said Wednesday, according to the Cowboys' team website, crediting daily practice reps against the Cowboys' offense during OTAs and training camp for the shift.
Parker, formerly the Philadelphia Eagles' passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, takes over a unit that struggled badly in 2025 under then-coordinator Matt Eberflus. That season, Dallas ranked last in the NFL in opponent passing yards allowed (251.5 per game) and opponent points allowed (30.1 per game), 30th in total yards allowed (377.0 per game) and tied for 22nd in sacks (35.0). Dallas's defense once ranked among the league's best under Dan Quinn, who served as coordinator from 2021-23 before leaving to become head coach of the Washington Commanders - the Cowboys finished fifth in opponent points allowed in both 2022 and 2023. Williams, a 2022 All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, signed a three-year, $105.9 million extension with Dallas in August, making his $35.3 million average annual salary the second-highest among NFL interior defensive linemen. Acquired from the New York Jets at last season's trade deadline in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick and defensive lineman Mazi Smith, Williams recorded 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, an interception and 53 tackles across 15 games split between both teams. Pro Football Focus ranked him second among defensive linemen in overall grade (88.8) and seventh in total pressures (51).
The Cowboys have also reshaped the roster around Williams, signing safety Jalen Thompson to a three-year, $33 million deal and cornerback Cobie Durant on a one-year, $4 million contract, while acquiring linebacker Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. In the draft, Dallas traded up to select Ohio State safety Caleb Downs at No. 11 and added UCF linebacker Malachi Lawrence at No. 23. The Cowboys open their 2026 regular season on the road against the New York Giants on Sept. 13.
